Banned Books Banner
Watercolor on paper (original)
58" x 9" original or printed banner repeated at any width times 9" high (meant to be displayed as printed banner freize)
2024
This piece is inspired by a banner one would typically see in a classroom or library. However, the books pictured here are among the most commonly banned books in America. Many of these books have been cultural treasures for generations, challenging readers to analyze and question history and the status quo. Others provide young readers an opportunity to read about unique perspectives, some of which may help them feel seen, understood, and not alone. Young people depend on their local and school libraries to carry these books, but many have been removed from the shelves, due to legislation and political pressure.
Intended to be displayed as a freize repeated multiple times, the banner makes a statement about normalizing the presence of these themes and stories in public spaces.
